edited photos

Some of the photos i thought were good enough to use on my front cover, contents and double page. As i had photos already i took of the band Apocalyptica I think I will use them on my contents page and front cover, however, I am going to do my double page spread on the band on the cover, Breakfast At Midnight, so i had to edit many photos for this.

Here are the photos i think i will use for my front cover edited. I didnt like the background for the first one, therefore i turned it all black, i think this also makes it look more like a rock music group.

On my contents page I have decided to use quite a few photos to make it more interesting. I also edited some of these to make them more suitable for a rock music magazine.I think I will edit the photo of the band further, and I thought that on my contents page I would put something about a band teaching children to play, hence the photo of the drum kit and the girl.

I have decided to use on of the photos I took of just one of the band for my double page spread because I can make it looker darker and creepier, also, I really like this photo.

I edited it quite a lot, changing the background and also adding shadow to it. It is a bit like the metallica photo on the double page I studied, I thought I would try to copy this idea and i think it turned out well.

Cover Lines

I need some cover lines for my front cover, I have decided, looking at my poll to use The Sound as the name of the magazine.
I think for some of my cover lines i will mention bands, such as Fightstar and Apocalyptica as they are both rock bands.
Also, i can put things like, Inside Story and Exclusive.
I think a quote from my interview with the band on the cover should be put on as a cover line, possibly something funny or scandalous?

Photoshoot

These are my photos from my photoshoot, many of which will have to be edited as some are too dark or i do not like the background. A couple of them unfortunately are blurry as well.

Fonts

I am trying to decide on what type of font to use on my magazine, at this time I am not entirely sure what I am going to call my magazine, it depends on the results of the poll, but personally I prefer either CRASH! or ROCK THIS! With these fonts I like the 2nd and 4th one. I then tried using a couple of different fonts on ROCK THIS! The first font is quite interesting and looks good as they are completely different. Also on a coloured background many of these fonts would really stand out and look interesting.

colours

I was having trouble thinking about colours when i was doing my initial designs so i decided to look at a colour wheel to see which colours clashed or complimented each other.
Purples and reds seem to go well together, however, these are colours more suited to a girly magazine not a rock one. Blues and purples, or greens also work and are getting more towards being suitable for a rock magazine. However blacks and whites go together and with everything. Therefore I have decided to try out lots of different colour schemes together with different layouts

Please vote in my poll

How much should I charge for my magazine?
1 - 2 pounds
2 - 3 pounds
3 - 4 pounds
4 - 5 pounds

The Treatment of my magazine

The magazine

Target Readership: It is aimed at teenagers, mainly between the age of 16 and 20 who are interested in rock music. They are usually males, but there is something in the magazine for female readers as well. At this age they can become rebellious and may teenagers of the day like rock music, or more lively music. Also, they are usually also starting to move away from home, so they are not controlled by their parents and can usually do what they want, such as go to concerts. This is why this magazine in mainly based around bands and future concerts. It can also provide advice about how to stay safe at concerts, and which new and upcoming bands may be worth going to see. It is therefore aimed at more daring and adventurous people who want to get the most out of life while they are still young and have the chance. The parents of the readers will fit into a C1/C2 socioeconomic grouping but as it is aimed at older teenagers they may not be relying as much on their parents. It is mainly going to be based on new bands but there may be things about older bands in it.

Form and Style: It is an A4 colour magazine, although they are dark colours to fit in with the rock theme. It contains information about famous bands and also new ones. The cover images are of bands, usually young ones the same age as the readers, to appeal and give motivation to them. The magazine will be sold at £2 , which is an average price for a teenage magazine, and making it affordable to all economic groupings. In contrast to the colour the cover lines show that it is a lively magazine containing lots of things. They are the brightest colours on the cover.

Themes and Typical features: It has many features typical to a rock magazine. Every issue includes many articles about famous bands, or a new and upcoming band. There is always a competition and a poster. Also, there are reviews about new albums, and sometimes little bits of gossip about singers and songwriters, this part may mainly be aimed at female readers. Many of the articles will be fairly informal, considering the age range it is aimed at. The writers will use language familiar to the target audience to make the magazine more interesting.

Potential Advertisers: There aren’t any regular advertisers but the bands interviewed may advertise their works in the magazine each week. Also, ticket sellers for concerts such as the Internet sellers “seetickets” will occasionally advertise.

Editorial Team: The editorial team will be experienced writer and designers, but also some contributors from band managers who can edit and advise. Most of the team will be quite young so they will have more of an idea of the kind of music that will attract people.

First Questionnaire

My target audience will be between 16 and 20, when people are growing up and becoming independent or moving away from home. However, I am not sure what look of magazine will appeal to them. It will be a rock music based magazine, so possibly aimed more at males, or any females who are really interested in rock music. I have a few ideas of the layouts of my magazine, but I have yet to decide on colours.

I would appreciate it if people could answer this questionnaire, it would help with final designs.

1. Rock music magazines, such as Kerrang use dark colours, such as black and reds. I may use these to emphasise the rock feel. Would you buy a magazine like this or would you prefer brighter colours?

2. Would you prefer lots of pictures on the cover or would that put you off?

3. Q magazine costs £3.90, and Kerrang! costs around £2. Which would you be more willing to pay for this magazine?

4. Would you like to see bands the target audiences age on the front cover, and have features about them inside?

5. Which of these names do you like?

a. The Sound
b. Crash
c. Brand New
d. Impact!
e. Any other suggestions?

Photoshoot

White background, as it is not busy or distracting, snow? therefore natural light

Rock goth band - black clothing, black make up, pink accessories eg gloves.
All girl band

Maybe i could put black and pink on the cover to match the clothes.
appeals to genders - females - all girl band - motivation, proud.
males - no males on it, will find the girls attractive.
Will make the genders both want to buy it.

Also, need photos for my contents and double page

Colours and Layouts of Other magazines

Mojo - aimed at older people, plain colours, reds blacks only a few colours per page. Pages black and white background.
Minimalist, not distracting.

Top of the Pops - seems very girly, pinks
Lots of images and words, lively don't know what to look at first
Lots of different fonts, swirly pretty.
Things you associate with girls, also, lots of gossip.

I want my magazine to be more aimed at rock music not pop and gossip, however, Kerrang! is a lot likke Top of the Pops, there is lots going on, on the front cover and contents especially.

On most front covers the front cover photo overlaps the masthead, only showing part of the masthead.

Mojo and Q are more sophisticated
I could also go along the Q look route. With only one photo on the front cover and it maybe a bit more lively on the contents, mixing Q and Kerrang! styles a bit.

I don't want a lot of bright colours in my magazine, particularly on the front cover, as it is brash and unattractive.

Possible double page layouts

With these they are very similar, I have gone down the route of having a full page devoted to a photo. I think I may use the second idea as my double page, as it is a bit more lively

Initial Contents Pages

These are my two designs for a contents page the first one is very busy, like a Kerrang! magazine, however, i like the second one better as it is more organised and i like the idea of an image at the top.

Initial Front Cover designs

I like all of these designs, i think the last one is a bit too busy and the first one has a bit of a strange cover line pattern but i think i will try to merge the second and the third one.

Double Page Spreads

Double page spread in Kerrang!

Main image, takes up all page, but separate, “back track” only thing on that page.
Letter of paragraph, large font

Not much writing, not many colours, photos.

At the top “Foxboro Hot Tubs” seems like an advertisement for something, and also seems un linked, until you read the article, it is placed at the top to make you do this, also it is in bright colours unlike most of the rest of the pages.

Both the picture and the line “Green Day Boys Get Kinky With Their Garage-Rock Alter Egos.” Draw people in, mainly because they do not know what it is about and are interested.

Mojo December 2008

The whole double page has a very dark feel about it. This is emphasised in the way that there is no colour; the whole thing is black and white, very like the cover of this same issue.
The article is about Metallica who are a very heavy metal band. One full page is a photo of one of the Metallica members, James Hetfield, whose picture is a close up of his face, which is surrounded by shadow. His eyes are the most obvious, and very dark. He has a menacing expression; it makes it quite scary and mysterious. It however, does fit in with the type of band he’s in.
Half the page with the article on is taken up by the pull quote, which is something that continues in the article. It is in a large font but some words are in a bold font as well, they are the words that sound the most dark and mysterious. This, again, fits in with the Metallica menacing image.
