Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The magazine represents older teenagers, and rock music fans. I have represented them by uding images of people in bands their own age, and also the type of language young people use, except for all the swearwords as this wouldn't be appropriate for my magazine, younger people may read it. It is not completely aimed at older teenagers though some of it is. For example, winning backstage passes are something prehaps younger teenagers cannot do. There are almost an aqual amount of pictures to writing, though on the contents page there are dramatically more words than pictures. My target audience is people of the ages 16 - 20, hence all the pictures and the fact that "The Sound" seems quite a lively name.
Who would be the audience of your media product?
In the progression I feel I have learnt a few new things. I have learnt how to make my front cover professional, my preliminary task did not look very professional, it looked very like what it was designed to be, a student magazine,

The magazine also represents the C1/C2 socioeconomic group as it is cheap, it doesn't seem like a magazine you would keep as a collegection, but I think it is something you may keep a little longer than a magazine such as Kerrang, which is a throwaway magazine.

Who would be the audience of your media product?
How did you attract/address your audience?
Looking at my audience feedback I found that my they would be interested and attracted by blacks and reds and blues, i used black a lot but I felt that yellow worked quite well so i used yellow instead of blues. Also, they wanted one main picture on the cover relating to both the magazine and my double page spread. Also I found that they would be more interested in a magazine about new bands, as there are not that many magazines like that around and they found that young bands were interesting because they could easily relate to these people.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I used many different technologies in constructing this product; these were computer programmes such as Publisher, Coral and Photoshop. I have used Publisher before but I learnt more about the detail you can go into to organise a page, such as making columns and organising my photographs in the contents page especially.

I used many different technologies in constructing this product; these were computer programmes such as Publisher, Coral and Photoshop. I have used Publisher before but I learnt more about the detail you can go into to organise a page, such as making columns and organising my photographs in the contents page especially.
Also, with the editing of my photos Coral and Photoshop were harder to use than I expected, it took me a long time to edit them because I did not know exactly what I was doing, if I do this again I may be more time efficient because I now know what I am doing, Coral was easier to use than Photoshop and I think also more effective. I learnt how hard it was to edit a digital photo, especially my front cover image because of the way that it was taken, the fact it was from an angle on a cold day.
I had used a digital camera but I learnt more about a photo shoot and how hard they are to carry it out, some of my models were not necessarily the best posers, and it was hard because I did not know exactly what I wanted them to do, I think I should have organised this better.
This was the first time I used an MP3 recorder to record parts of this evaluation, this was fairly easy even though it was a new experience, however, it had to be a very quiet place when I was recording, because on one of the tries there was a lot of background noise which ruined the recording.
On the internet I had never used blogs or polls before; they were both pretty easy to use I just had to think carefully about my layout to make it look good and also pay attention and reference to my polls in my blog when I was constructing the product.
What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
In the progression I feel I have learnt a few new things. I have learnt how to make my front cover professional, my preliminary task did not look very professional, it looked very like what it was designed to be, a student magazine,
with this music magazine I have put a picture over the whole of my front cover, which I did not do in my student magazine and also I have improved the layout of the front cover after looking at other music magazines that are mainstream and popular, at the same time however, I have also made it colourful and lively so it will attract my target audience’s eye.
I have learnt more about what my target audience likes, I have paid attention to my polls and questionnaires. I have studied other music magazines to find similarities and essentials to put in a music magazine. I have also learnt more about how to design a magazine. My front cover is more colourful and organised, my contents page is both busy and sophisticated, and as I had never designed a double page before it was quite difficult to do at first, however, I learnt more about how to write and interview to make it interesting, also, I had to be careful with the title of the article, in case part of it was caught in the gutter of the page when it would be made into a magazine.
This is why my title is split up over the two pages. I think my magazine has improved from my preliminary task, I was much more critical and organised this time around.
Final Edits
Looking at my audience feedback I saw what i needed to change on my front cover, it needed more coverlines and a bit more structure in how and where I put them. Therefore I used arrows to organise them. This cover is bright which I think will attract my target audience, and although the colours clash it is still lively and a bit stylish.
This is my FINAL front cover.
This is my FINAL front cover.
Looking again at my contents page I realised that the text was too large and there were things that needed to be added that I had overlooked the first time, such as, a picture of the editor, the name of the magazine and date. Therefore I added these, in the process I also added a few more things to my contents as things in the magazine. This extra content may make it more interesting for readers.
I think this is my final page
I looked again at my double page and realised that there wasn't very much text and there were some things that I needed to change. I therefore put the text into columns, and moved the title and changed the font. I also realised that I had missed page numbers and the title of the magazine on the page.

Edit of front cover
This is my next edit for my front cover, hopefully nothing more will be needed done to it.
I added more cover lines to make it more interesting, also, even though the yellow and pink clash slightly i quite like it. The way I placed the cover lines means that the faces of the band are slightly framed by the words.
I may need to put more cover lines at the bottom of the magazine, most of the names on the front cover are new bands which will meet the treatment of my magazine.

Editors Letter
I decided to try to write an editors letter for the contents page of my magazine. I have never written an editors letter before so I'm not sure if it would be OK for my magazine, I will post it and see what people say about it.
This is the beginning of an era.
Hi guys, get ready, lots of new stars heading your way, we’ve had so many bands this time round we just cant fit them all in. But maybe next time, theres some bands I cant wait to show you. And I cant wait for May, The Sound office is giving away signed CDs and even instruments from old and new bands, such as Breakfast At Midnight, and even Fightstar. All you need to do is enter! Look to the back!
Enjoy, see you next month!

First front cover design
I was thinking about putting this design as my front cover but then i realised that it wasnt as good as I had first thought, it is a very dark background, which, although it makes it seem like a rock magazine it puts me off reading it a bit, also, the band look very posed, mainly because they have their instruments.

Double Page
Double page spread
I had some inspiration about my double page article, so therefore decided to write it ahead of when I had planned, therefore, I can construct my double page easier as I have sorted out the photos already.
Here is my article
The Sound! caught up with Rachel and Marie from Breakfast At Midnight to get all the juicy gossip from 6 months of music. We meet in a cosy cafe in the middle of Coventry University, the base of their operations. They both greet me enthusiastically as I arrive but then curl back up into their armchairs.
So, all the men out there want to know, how’s the love life?
Marie: Well, there’s this one boy
Rachel: Who we’ve all dated at one time or another, I dated him first, Marie and Kate just stole him. But, for all the boys out there, we’re single now!
We hear you write all your own music, that must be stressful?
Rachel: Sometimes, some of the songs just simply come together, so someone will be tapping a tune or beat and someone else, usually Katy would blurt out a few lines and the song started there.
Marie: Not always, doesn’t help that we don’t like the same music. So it CAN be stressful, not everything fits together straight away
R: Does
M: Does not
Ok, so you’ve done local gigs but now your setting off into the big wide world and starting your own tour.
M: I’m terrified. We’re only doing it in England for the first 2 months 1 month as a supporting act, and the second we split and go it alone. Well, with our trusty experienced manager Gregg Morrison.
R: Love that guy
M: Yeah.......Anyway...after that its our holidays, so we’re doing some gigs in Scotland, one on the Isle of Man oddly and loads in Wales.
Was recording your first album scary?
R: No, not really because we’d done some recording before and once you get into the music it just happens.
Any other gossip you wish to share with us?
M: Rach pulled a policeman on Wednesday; she’d been naughty and was speeding slightly. You could have been arrested you know, but when the policeman saw you so got a fine and a phone number.
Any thoughts about my article will be welcomed

Second Photoshoot
I tried editing some of my photos from my first photoshoot, for the contents page and double page spread they are fine, however, i feel that for the front cover they are a little bit too posed, therefore I did another photoshoot, with them outside and not posed, and also not dressed up in black or with musical instruments like they were last time.
They looked a lot more natural and like they were having fun, except sometimes they did pull strange faces.
I like the picture of them looking over their shoulders towards the camera, this is a possibility for my front cover, the photos with just two of the band i cannot use on my front cover but if I still need an image for my contents page I can consider using one of these, probably the first or third one.

edited photos
Some of the photos i thought were good enough to use on my front cover, contents and double page. As i had photos already i took of the band Apocalyptica I think I will use them on my contents page and front cover, however, I am going to do my double page spread on the band on the cover, Breakfast At Midnight, so i had to edit many photos for this.
Here are the photos i think i will use for my front cover edited. I didnt like the background for the first one, therefore i turned it all black, i think this also makes it look more like a rock music group.
On my contents page I have decided to use quite a few photos to make it more interesting. I also edited some of these to make them more suitable for a rock music magazine.I think I will edit the photo of the band further, and I thought that on my contents page I would put something about a band teaching children to play, hence the photo of the drum kit and the girl.
I have decided to use on of the photos I took of just one of the band for my double page spread because I can make it looker darker and creepier, also, I really like this photo.
I edited it quite a lot, changing the background and also adding shadow to it. It is a bit like the metallica photo on the double page I studied, I thought I would try to copy this idea and i think it turned out well.
Cover Lines
I need some cover lines for my front cover, I have decided, looking at my poll to use The Sound as the name of the magazine.
I think for some of my cover lines i will mention bands, such as Fightstar and Apocalyptica as they are both rock bands.
Also, i can put things like, Inside Story and Exclusive.
I think a quote from my interview with the band on the cover should be put on as a cover line, possibly something funny or scandalous?

Fonts
I am trying to decide on what type of font to use on my magazine, at this time I am not entirely sure what I am going to call my magazine, it depends on the results of the poll, but personally I prefer either CRASH! or ROCK THIS! With these fonts I like the 2nd and 4th one. I then tried using a couple of different fonts on ROCK THIS! The first font is quite interesting and looks good as they are completely different. Also on a coloured background many of these fonts would really stand out and look interesting.

colours
I was having trouble thinking about colours when i was doing my initial designs so i decided to look at a colour wheel to see which colours clashed or complimented each other.
Purples and reds seem to go well together, however, these are colours more suited to a girly magazine not a rock one. Blues and purples, or greens also work and are getting more towards being suitable for a rock magazine. However blacks and whites go together and with everything. Therefore I have decided to try out lots of different colour schemes together with different layouts
